Mae Hong Son province is isolated and seems frozen in the past, away from modernization. It is located in the north-west of Thailand, on the border with Myanmar.
Leaving Chiang Mai by car and taking the road to Mae Hong Son is already a discovery in itself, as the roads of this region are really beautiful. Moreover, western tourists do not commonly visit this part of the country, still well preserved.
The very few ‘Padaung’ ethnic communities can be found in Mae Hong Son, as well as other communities such as Karen, Pa-O, etc…
The capital of the province is a small, rural and charming town, that without any doubt captivates travelers fond of authenticity in a remote but very picturesque part of the country.

It is important to understand that Padaung women (vulgarly called ‘Giraffes- Women) do not wear rings around their neck of legs to amuse passing by tourists, as it is also wrong believing that Thai people use this ethnic with commercial purposes
Padaung were and still are in some cases victims of persecutions from Burmese army. Some left Myanmar to find shelter in Thailand. Besides assistance given by Thai Government, Padaung generate their own revenues by selling their products (mainly fabric – Padaung are skilled weavers) on local markets or to tourists visiting the region
- How to behave when visiting such a village?
- How to understand and respect their culture uses and habits?
- How can we help them?
It is effectively important to consider that such a village is not a zoo and our western civilization living model, our uses or habits are not universal, but a model that is ours. Each individual has right to own life model and own differences
Therefore, when we arrive in such a village, let us not steal pictures, but ask permission for… Let us not pay pictures we shot with rubbish or imported candies. The best way to thank them welcoming us in their village is to buy them a scarf that they made.
By acting so, we show that we consider them, not as curiosity objects, but as traders. Noting will be more gratifying to their eyes.
