Although Vientiane is on its way to development, it surprises visitors by its provincial aspect although it is the capital of the country. We must bear in mind that Laos counts only 7 million people, for a surface of 240.000 Km2… Vientiane has less than 800.000 inhabitants and all these figures explain somehow its provincial aspect.
The city is very charming, namely because it is edged by the Mekong River that has created here a wide alluvial bank, widely cultivated as a huge urban vegetable garden. Several streets are still unpaved and bikes are widely used. One can see recent or oldest architectural testimonies of its French colonial past and some old Buddhist temples are worth a visit thanks to their very unique style.
Some outskirts deserve to be visited as well, and therefore justify one to extend a stay in Vientiane, that is generally too short. One can also undertake nice bike rides in the countryside around the city and admire paddy fields or some forests featuring beautiful wild orchids.

VIENTIANE, THE CAPITAL OF THE ‘KINGDOM OF A MILLION ELEPHANTS
Vientiane, though capital of the country cannot be compared to neighboring capitals, with dense urbanization, sky-scrapers everywhere and huge populations… Vientiane is rather a provincial looking like city, with outdated ‘charme’ from former Indochina floating in the air.
